Well, what can I say? The roads are in a terrible state!

Firstly, Just to clear up a misunderstanding, we did not ask for Church Lane to be resurfaced twice in a matter of months. The surface started breaking up a few weeks after this road had been resurfaced. The issues, it seems, was that the materials the contractor used were faulty so they and the manufacturer of the materials accepted liability and did it again. It seems generally ok now but in truth there are still some areas of this new surface that are beginning to cause concern. 

The work currently being done on the High Street and Kennel Hill is entirely inadequate. Patching a road where the foundation has crumbled is not saving the Borough Highways Department money, it is simply an attempt to be seen to be doing something, even in the knowledge that is will be a complete waste of time and money, cause enormous inconvenience and be little more than a reason to meet in the pub to vent frustration. I qualify to say this as I believe I am old enough to be cynical.

The patches on Kennel Hill have proved the point. The road next to the patches broke up within hours of the patches being finished. So the rest of the work has stopped. Once more our Borough Ward Councillor, Doug is following up on our behalf at Borough Hall. 

FYI, when the High Street is properly resurfaced, the Highways Department have agreed to lower the level of the road to reestablish the curb hights. I was told in a meeting the other day that the surface of the High Street is 17 inches higher than it used to be! We certainly wouldn’t want to go that deep, but we’ll keep an eye on this in case someone at Borough gets swept away on a tide of enthusiasm, however unlikely.

The Borough have refused to re line the high Street before the resurfacing is complete. Something else we are fighting, considering most of the lines are so faint they have no effect whatsoever.

A gentle reminder though; it is not only illegal to park on the zip zag lines but is dangerous. If you park on these zig zags and a child is hurt because the crossing is obscured by moving traffic, you will not only have to live with that but I suspect you might find you are living somewhere else once the court has has it’s say.
